Before Course Registration

Course Registration: Things to think about before FASET Orientation.

During FASET Orientation you will register for your first semester courses. While your academic advisor will meet with you and discuss your potential course plan, some students may wish to plan ahead of this advisement period. The steps below will help you prepare for the advisement and registration process.

1. List courses you already have credit for through AP classes or college transfer courses. For information on AP requirements, click here. For information on whether courses will transfer, click here. To see two different student opinions about AP credit—one who says “Take the credit” and one who says “Take the course over”-- click here. If you haven’t yet received your AP scores, don’t worry: Georgia Tech receives the scores in early July and will provide you with information at orientation about whether you received credit for the class.

2. See the recommended curriculum for your major. Visit your department’s web site. Each major has a list of its own courses and a suggested plan for how you should complete the degree. Remember that at FASET, you will be pre-registered for up to 4 courses according to your designated major. This will give you a starter schedule from which to work during FASET. If your major on file with Georgia Tech has changed, please contact the Office of Admissions at (404) 894-4154. Note that your pre-registered schedule may continue to reflect the old major if changes are not made prior to the registration of courses in early July. Don’t worry, though, we’ll help you make adjustments when you register at FASET.

3. Take a look at core and elective classes. Everyone is required to take a certain number of Humanities and Social Science elective credits. Find some that you would enjoy.

4. Consider taking GT1000: Freshman Seminar. This course is designed to help your adjustment to college while educating you on the skills you need to be a successful Georgia Tech student.

5. Decide how many credit hours you’d like to take your first semester. The minimum number to be a full-time student is 12 credit hours, and the average Georgia Tech student takes between 12 and 17 hours per semester. How do you decide how many? Consider how many hours you are bringing in, how long you’d like to be at Georgia Tech, whether you will co-op or study abroad during your college career, how many credit hours your major requires, etc. And consider the challenges you may face during your first semester at college as well.

6. See what courses are available in the registration system. You can search for courses or simply browse by subject. For a brief tutorial on how to understand the registration system, click here. For FAQ’s, click here.

7. Go ahead and update your records with emergency contact information now. You’ll do this by logging into the registration system and viewing the Personal Information link.

8. Don’t forget to send in those Health Immunization Forms before coming to FASET, or you won’t be able to register! Bring the confirmation postcard with you to FASET, or confirm with Health Services before you arrive that all paperwork is complete.

Keep in mind that it is more important that you have classes that you need than to have the perfect timing for the first semester. It is rare that you will get the exact time of class you are looking for; however, the longer you are at Georgia Tech, the earlier you will register and the perfect schedule can be yours. For now, your priority should be on what courses to take and not what time they are offered.

Bring your thoughts and questions to FASET, and ask your FASET Leader and your academic advisor to help you with the answers.
